Is this really how you want to be remembered?
REALLY??
This question often comes up, especially among Year 10 and 11 committees looking for a more relaxed alternative to a traditional formal.
Choosing a more casual event to contrast with your Year 12 formal is perfectly fine. However, there are many ways to achieve this without going to the extreme of a fancy-dress theme.
We want to explain why embracing a fancy-dress concept is generally a really bad idea for your formal. With over 35 years of experience overseeing countless formals, we’ve seen many fancy-dress events, and sadly, none have been truly successful. They’ve all faced problems in one way or another.
Firstly, if you’re considering a high-end venue like a 5-star hotel, forget about fancy dress; they simply won’t allow it. They understand the potential issues, just like we do, and for good reason.
There are several reasons why this idea is unwise. Primarily, people behave differently when they’re in costume. A sense of anonymity takes over. Wearing a different identity can make your subconscious feel that your true self is hidden, protected from the consequences of your costume’s actions. Essentially, people might do things in costume that they wouldn’t normally consider, believing their disguise gives them immunity.
Furthermore, costumes make it hard to identify troublemakers. For security, venues use CCTV cameras, and when people misbehave – causing damage or harm – the cameras are crucial for identifying them. When individuals are unidentifiable, the school, parents, or committee members may face the consequences.
Costumes also create opportunities to sneak unwanted items into the event. Bulky costumes and props can conceal drugs, alcohol, weapons, and other prohibited items. While some may see this as teenage rebellion, the situation becomes serious if someone gets sick or injured, and even worse if law enforcement or security gets involved, potentially shutting down the event due to out-of-control contraband.
Fancy-dress attire is uncomfortable for sitting, eating, and especially dancing. Most importantly, it creates an unflattering image, and there will be plenty of photographic evidence. Is that how you want to be remembered in the years to come?
A formal event is exactly that – formal – not a children’s costume party. Take this opportunity to present yourself elegantly and act like a young adult. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy being treated like one.
Essentially, a fancy-dress formal only works if you’re aiming for higher costs, fewer venue options, physical discomfort, emotional distress, and embarrassing photos. If those are your goals, then fancy dress is for you, but it’s not for us.
If you want a successful formal, avoid fancy dress! It’s just asking for trouble.
